In shoes such as this, the support will usually come from the shoe upper, where the fit is a little snugger and prevents your foot from moving about. 

Shoes that are known as stability running shoes or support shoes offer a little more support that prevents an athlete from over-pronating, when on landing, the foot rolls inwards, or under-pronating where the foot rolls outwards. Continual landing like this can lead to knee and back injuries and is always better if corrected. 

Special orthotic insoles can help with this, as can shoes designed specifically for runners with these attributes. In addition, some shoes are designed to offer additional support and will feature a unique insole, midsole, and often will also have additional padding around the tongue and heel collar of the shoe.
