Top 7 Best Shaving Creams For Men
#1 Taylor of Old Bond Street Shaving Cream
If you’ve read any of our other best of lists, such as best pre-shave oils and best shaving soaps, then you’re probably already familiar with Taylor of Old Bond Street, which is just one of many in a long line of outstanding British shaving companies.
If we’re honest, we’d probably have to say Taylor of Old Bond Street is hands down one of, if not the best shaving companies we’ve come across and their outstanding shaving creams are no exception.
Available in more than 10 different scents, including Sandalwood (a personal favorite and the #1 best-selling shaving cream on Amazon), Coconut, Almond, Grapefruit, Avocado, Rose, and fragrance-free natural, you’re sure to find a fragrance you love.
Not only that but regarding performance, Taylor is far and away one of the best shaving creams for men around.
Although it may be a bit more expensive than many others, we’ve yet to come across a single person who didn’t think it was well worth the added cost.
#2 Truefitt & Hill Shaving Cream
Another one of the old-school English shaving companies (and another one of our personal favorites), Truefitt & Hill produces an excellent line of shaving creams and also made our list of the best aftershave balms.
When it comes to fragrance, we find Truefitt & Hill to have one of the most extensive ranges, with smells like Trafalgar and Grafton having a more traditional shaving scent (that reminds many of their grandfathers) and fragrances like Ultimate Comfort, Sandalwood and 1805 having a more modern scent that’s popular amongst the younger crowd.
The majority of these shaving creams are designed to be used with a brush, but the company’s No. 10 cream is a true brushless cream.
All in all, there is no doubt that Truefitt & Hill produces some of the best shaving cream for men you’re likely to find, with the only negative being that their products cost quite a bit more than most of the others on our list.
Still, that’s probably to be expected from a company that is listed as the official shaving supplier for the British Royal Family.
#3 Geo F. Trumper Shaving Cream
Another one of the traditional English companies to make several of our lists (we especially like their aftershave balm), we had to include Geo F Trumper Shaving Cream because it offers easily as good or better lubrication than virtually any other product we’ve yet to come across.
Like Taylor of Old Bond Street and Truefitt & Hill, Geo F Trumper produces a wide range of classic and modern scents, including some that most wouldn’t exactly consider manly like rose, limes or lavender.
However, despite what you may think, these scents are incredibly pleasing and quite masculine.
In fact, we’d probably choose the Rose fragrance as one of our favorites, as its only slightly floral and reminds us more of freshly washed laundry.
All in all, Geo F Trumper produces some truly excellent shaving creams for a reasonably good price.
#4 eShave Shaving Cream
If you’re looking for a traditional shaving cream that still builds up a rich, foamy lather like you’re used to, eShave Shaving Cream might be your best bet.
We consistently found it to have superior lathering potential compared to most others, no matter whether you use a brush or not.
We also love the fact that it contains no parabens, animal ingredients, synthetic colors or sulfates, making it an excellent choice for the more health conscious guys out there.
When it comes to eShave, you’ve again got quite a few fragrance choices, including our personal favorites Cucumber and White Tea.
We also liked that eShave put a spin on the traditional sandalwood scent and found their Orange Sandalwood to be less overpowering and more pleasing than most other brands of sandalwood products.
The only thing to note is that unlike all of the others on our list, these products are not specifically designed for men, so you may want to stay away from the floral scent.
That being said, none of the smells are overly feminine. It’s another one of those products that are a bit more expensive, but considering its performance, we’d gladly pay double that amount—it’s that good.
#5 ‘Art of Shaving’ Shaving Cream
Of all the products on our list, Art of Shaving is probably the most controversial, as most men either love it or hate it.
Still, considering how many positive reviews we came across, we figured we had to give it a shot—and we’re glad we did, as we were pleasantly surprised with its performance.
In truth, it probably isn’t quite as good as the traditional English companies, but that doesn’t mean it won’t get the job done.
Available in lavender, sandalwood, lemon and unscented versions, this cream works equally as well with or without a brush and is a favorite of many men.
That being said, we’ve recently seen many reports about the quality being not nearly what it used to be (Proctor & Gamble purchased the company in 2009), as many men report it to be thinner and not as fragrant as it once was.
Still, we can’t comment on this since we didn’t get a chance to try it before, so you may want to read some more reviews if you’re considering picking this one up.
#6 Pacific Shaving Company Caffeinated Shaving Cream
The first shaving cream on our list to be made in the USA, Pacific Shaving Company’s unique Caffeinated Shaving Cream is like nothing else you’ve ever tried.
We’ve all had those mornings when we’d rather not get up out of bed, and it seems like no amount of coffee will get us ready for the day, which is exactly what this shaving cream is designed for, as it’s like a shot of espresso for your skin.
Although many people are unaware, caffeine has numerous skin benefits, including reducing puffiness and swelling, which will help your face look and feel its best—no matter how late of a night you had.
Still, the caffeine isn’t the only reason to love this shaving cream, as it also contains numerous organic and natural ingredients that help nourish and protect the skin, including aloe vera, spearmint, sunflower oil and shea butter.
Plus, considering it typically sells for less than $10, we’d recommend this for anyone looking for an excellent quality shaving cream for a decent price.
All in all, we love everything about this product (although not all men are wild about the smell) and find it to be one of the most invigorating shaving products we’ve tested.
#7 Kiehl’s Close Shavers Squadron Ultimate Brushless Shaving Cream
While most of the other products on our list work better with a shaving brush, Kiehl’s has to be one of the best genuinely brushless shaving creams currently on the market.
This shaving cream is one of the only ones we’ve come across that you don’t need to add water to before lathering (it contains Sodium PCA, a natural ingredient that binds water to the skin).
It won’t leave your face feeling dry or greasy like many others and offers an excellent all-around shave.
It seems to be especially popular amongst men who frequently suffer from razor burn, as most report the problem immediately went away as soon as they started using Kiehl’s.
It’s also popular amongst men who are looking for a shaving cream with a milder scent.
It’s not only incredibly affordable but works like a charm.
Traditional vs. Canned Shaving Cream
If you’ve never used traditional non-aerosol shaving cream, you don’t know what you’re missing as there are vast differences between traditional and canned shaving creams—starting with the lubrication factor.
In case you’re unaware, the entire purpose of using shaving cream is to help lubricate your face so that the razor slides gently over the skin. In simple terms, the better a shaving cream is at lubricating, the less irritation you’ll experience as a result of shaving.
The problem with most canned shaving creams is that they tend to use harsh silicones as a way to provide lubrication, whereas more traditional non-aerosol shaving creams typically use glycerin (which is a far superior lubricant).
Still, it’s not just in lubrication that canned creams fail to live up to traditional ones.
While the majority of traditional creams use more natural ingredients, most canned products use a variety of different harsh chemicals that are meant to help keep the skin from drying out.
The reason behind this is that the propellants used to eject the cream from the aerosol can are incredibly harsh and will quickly dry out the skin, thus making it necessary to add even more chemical ingredients to counter this effect.
So, all things being equal, your face would be much better off if it never came into contact with any shaving cream that comes out of a can.
In fact, probably the only redeeming factor with these products is they’re readily available, as most of the products we consider amongst the best shaving cream for men can only be purchased either online or in a specialty store.
That being said, they are more than worth the effort it takes to find them, as they just can’t be compared to all that cheap canned crap you’ve been using.
Traditional vs. Brushless Shaving Creams
As we’ve already established, when we use the term best shaving cream for men we’re referring to traditional non-aerosol shaving cream.
However, there is still quite a bit of variety when it comes to these products, as some are even designed to be used with a shaving brush while others will again lather well without one.
In truth, even with those products designed to be used with a shaving brush, it’s not necessary, but it will result in a better lather with less cream.
Be sure to check out our step by step guide on how to get the perfect lather with a shaving brush.
Other Benefits of Using a Top Quality Shaving Cream
So I’ve discussed the more scientific and technical benefits of using the best shaving cream for men.
Your skin will thank you; there is no doubt about that.
Over the years though, discussions on this website, with clients and general comments I’ve heard have made it clear to me there are some further benefits to using great shaving cream.
To my mind, you just can’t beat the smell of shaving cream.
Not only of the product while you are using it.
But the best shaving cream for men use better ingredients, so you smell better all day!
If you make the switch to one of these, you’ll wonder how you put up with the chemical smells that are created by cheap canned creams.
Quality products will leave a deep, subtle but strong scent.
You’ll feel more confident, feel fresher and feel like you’ve spent your money very wisely.
They’re Just Cool
Possibly a bit vain but I don’t care! Using one of the best shaving creams for me is just cooler.
The packaging, the tube or the tub, the branding – it’s all part of a better shaving experience.
If you choose a cream that requires a brush (see below), you’ll feel like you’ve finally become a grown up after all these years of pretending!
They’re a Pleasure
For a lot of guys, shaving is a mission.
It feels like an effort to have to do, like putting out the trash or watching anything that involves Kim Kardashian.
An excellent shaving routine stops that feeling.
It starts to feel like a treat.
Finding yourself a cream that makes shaving comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable means you have a few moments to yourself that you should savor.
My Two Cents on Shaving Creams
Although any avid readers of our site should already be more than aware of this fact, it begs to repeat that getting a close, quality shave requires using quality products.
While this is apparently true when it comes to choosing a razor (check out our post on the top safety razors), even those of you who continue to insist on using disposables (best disposables) or cartridge razors (Mach 3 vs Fusion) will likely still see tremendous benefits from using a higher quality shaving cream.
Still, the question then becomes trying to decide which is the best shaving cream for men.
There are so many thousands of different products on the market that finding the best shaving cream for men can be like searching for a needle in a haystack.
This is especially true when you consider all of the cheap canned creams that have flooded the market.
Although these products are relatively cheap and readily available, we really wouldn’t recommend them for anything but an emergency situation—when you desperately need a shave, and there is nothing better at hand.
On the other hand, more traditional shaving creams typically don’t come in a can, but instead in a tub or a tube.
Depending on the brand you end up choosing, you can probably expect to pay a bit more than you would a cheap canned cream.
Nonetheless, most people don’t find it much of an issue to pay a few dollars more for the best shaving cream for men.
Plus, although they may look a bit pricey at first glance, most of the products on our list of the best shaving cream for men will last much longer than those canned creams, as it only takes a small amount to build a good lather (especially if you use a shaving brush, which we highly recommend).
So, instead of subjecting your face to the pain and irritation most of us tend to associate with shaving, do your face a favor—throw away that can and instead invest in the best shaving cream for men.
